Hi, I’m looking for a wheat and dairy-free cereal for my toddler to eat (he has various allergies, including peanuts and soy as well) and I’m thinking of trying him on your Whole Os (I see that your facility also produces products on the same lines as nuts and soy but it’s almost impossible to find something guaranteed free of all my son’s allergens!!). I was just wondering if you have another cereal that might work for him that is also fortified with calcium? (It’s hard getting enough calcium into him considering his dairy allergy…). Thanks!

Hi Dana and thanks for reaching out to us on this. You’re right, Whole O’s is produced in a facility that uses nuts, soy and dairy. However, we have an extensive planning, cleaning and testing schedule in order to prevent any cross contamination. All of our products that do not contain peanuts, tree nuts, dairy or soy – as listed on the ingredient label are theoretically peanuts, tree nuts, dairy and soy free. Still, because of the remote chance of contamination from machinery or peanuts, nuts & soy or dairy in the plant we can’t guarantee. As for fortification, organic food companies such as ours are limited by government regulations as to fortification (a controversial topic). In most cases this involves adding synthetic substances to food - even if they are called minerals & vitamins. Many physicians today disagree with the premise that foodstuffs need supplementation. Fortification can also give people a false sense of security as to the nutrient value of what they are eating. If you add almond milk to your cereal, which tends to be fortified with calcium and vitamin d anyhow, this should suffice for your daily calcium intake. If you’re unsure about allergens and calcium fortification, you can bring a box to your medical practitioner and they can best assess if its right for you. All the best, Justine, Nature’s Path Team.

Hello,
If dairy is in the facility, why is it not included in the allergen statement with the peanuts, tree nuts, and soy? For those of us with severe dairy allergies, providing incomplete allergen information is somewhat unfair and misleading. Is there dairy in the facility of all your cereals or just specific ones. If so, which ones?

If it doesn’t have dairy in it it shouldn’t have casein unless they added it seperately as casein is the dairy protein not just the dairy/milk itself, and would need to be specified on the label. However, verifying this information is always best!

I have been searching for a sugar free O type cereal for my baby and have been completely unsuccessful. Not sure why every one has to contain some type of sugar, even if it’s called “cane juice”. Is there any way this may be taken out in the future and some type of natural juice used to flavor instead?

Hi Deb and thanks for getting in touch with us. This cereal is organic which means that it doesn’t contain artificial preservatives, additives or genetically modified organisms and the ingredients, such as the cane, is not grown with toxic pesticides, chemical fertilizers or fumigants. Your comments are important to us, therefore, I have passed it on to our R&D team who will look into it further. Take care, Jamie, Nature’s Path Team

I find your reply to Deb’s question just like a politicians - total side stepping. You reply with statements that bear no relation to her question and you don’t answer her question at all and it’s a question that I would like answered myself. Your cereals tend to have high sugar content. We all know that added sugar isn’t good for us. I would love to buy your cereals if it wasn’t for this issue.

Hi Amanda - thanks for sharing your feedback. I’m so sorry for disappointing you. We’re looking into lowering some of the sugar levels of our products which is what our R&D team does. I’m sorry I didn’t explain this fully. We also feel that having organic sugars in products is much more important than using refined sugars which is why I explained the importance of “organic”. We ensure that all our products have differing levels of sweetness for the tastes of consumers. If you are looking for a cereal lower than 4 grams of sugar such as the Whole O’s I suggest trying our Fruit Juice Sweetened Cornflakes, Heritage O’s, and any of our puffed cereals. Thanks for your message and take care, Jamie, Nature’s Path Team

My toddler loves this cereal (Along with Gorilla Munch). He is gluten-free and casein-free, and I plan to take him off soy as well (which is a shame because he LOVES the gluten-free waffles), so I am wondering about cross-contamination issues in your factory. I know on the box it says “Produced in a facility that uses peanuts, tree nuts or soy”, so I would like some information on the measures taken to prevent cross-contamination. Thank you.

Hi Danielle and thanks for reaching out to us. We’re so glad that your young one loves this cereal. It’s a terrific alternative to the conventional. We have strict production schedules and quality assurance methods which ensure the least allergenic foods are produced first. The products that contain gluten, soy and finally nuts are made and then the entire line is cleaned and the process re-starts. The equipment is also inspected and tested for gluten contamination. We have our allergen statement on our boxes because we want to ensure that those consumers with life threatening allergies know that there is a possibility of cross contamination. If you are unsure of a product, please take the product to your medical practitioner to confirm whether your toddler should eat it. All the best Danielle, Jamie, Nature’s Path Team

What would be the nutrition facts for 1 cup of this cereal? The serving size is 2/3 cup.
Hi there and thanks for
Submitted by Jamie on January 19, 2011 - 14:46.
Hi there and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. The serving size of this cereal is 2/3 cup (30g) so to figure out the nutritionals for 1 cup, some math is involved to figure out the other 1/3 cup. As an example take 110 (calories) for 2/3 cup divide by 2 = 55 for 1/3 cup. Then add the 110 for 2/3 cup and 55 for the other 1/3 and you have 165 calories for 1 cup. We use the 2/3 cup as a guide, but cereals must officially be measured according to grams (weight) not cups (volume) as regulated by the government. The nutrutional information is based on a serving size of 30g, so if you are tracking calories, it is best to weigh the cereal. All the best, Jamie, Nature’s Path Team

I am watching that i do not get too much fructose in my diet. I do not eat anything with HFCS added to it, and i also limit my intake of naturally occuring fructose in foods to less than 25 grams per day, because of the inferior quality of this sugar, and how it is matabilized very differently in the body compared to glucose. How much fructose does your product, fruit juice sweetened corn flakes, have in it per serving? Also this product states,” no genetically engineered seeds or ingredients”. Is this really true, because so much of the corn that is grown in the USA has already been genetically modified? I also have the same concerns for your product, Whole Os. Does this contain any GE ingredients and what is the fructose amount per serving? Also are any of these products available in the ECO packs? thanks for your response.

Thanks for your comment and questions. We currently don’t test our products for fructose amounts, only total sugars and carbohydrates per serving. And we are very proud to bear the Non-GMO Project Verification Seal. This lets our customers know that we’re the best choice in order to avoid genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Thanks so much for your question. Gluten is a protein found in wheat (including the related Kamut and spelt varieties), rye and barley. Gluten contributes to the elastic, ‘chewy’ texture of dough that is apparent in many foods made with wheat flour, such as bread. Whole O’s are certified gluten free, meaning there is no wheat, rye, barley or oat gluten present in the product. Hi. If it’s gluten-free, then it is wheat-free also. However, it doesn’t work the other way around. If it’s wheat-free, it doesn’t mean it’s gluten-free. :)
Actually, this is not
Submitted by Michelle (not verified) on January 18, 2011 - 08:33.
Actually, this is not correct. The gluten can be taken out of the wheat for the sake of using for example the wheat starge only. That means that there would be wheat in the product, which would be bad for the wheat intolerants (as myself), but not necessarily gluten. I hope that made sence. :-)

The cereal is good and crunchy and a fine way to start the problem. However, as an editor, I need to point out that your product contains a huge typo? The name of your cereal is “Whole O’s” and should be spelled as “Whole Os” as there is no need for an apostrophe. This is a huge mistake and should be corrected as it demeans the quality of your product.

Hi, I love your products but i wanted to try this one and something does not add up in the nutritional values. when you calculate calories using proteins , carbs (4 Kcal pre gram) and fats (9 Kcal per gram) it adds up to 120 Kcal per serving… actually it has very similar (total) values as the Heritage cerials which are indicated to be 120 Kcal per serving and the calculation works for it
so what is wrong here - there must be an error somewhere… i will appreciate your explanation. thanks

Hello Guy, thanks for bringing this to our attention. We passed your question onto the Regulatory Affairs Department and they told us the following:
“We checked the nutritional value and based on the “Whole O’s” nutritional facts, it’s showing:
Carbohydrate 25 g x 4 cal = 100 calories
Fat 1.5 g x 9 cal = 13.5 calories
Protein 2 g x 4 cal = 8 calories
Total calories = 121.5 calories which should be (shown as ) 120 calories.”
We’ve fixed the error and our new boxes will be printed with the correct information. Thanks again for letting us know. All the best, Leah, Nature’s Path Brand Ambassador
